Conducted a comprehensive geotechnical evaluation of the proposed road alignment to connect the Native Village of Akutan with the new small boat harbor (currently under construction at the head of Akutan Bay). The remoteness and steep topography of Akutan Island required NGE-TFT to employ less traditional exploration method including ground-penetrating radar and portable hand augering to evaluate bedrock depths and overburden thicknesses. Subsurface and material information obtained by NGE-TFT, as well as past experiences with construction practices on the island, helped to guide road design and result in the overall shortening of the road alignment, saving the project considerable construction cost.
